Banedanmark has awarded a contract for an expansion of the catenary system for electric trains. The following nine non-electrified railway sections (nos. 1-9) will be covered by the contract:
1) Esbjerg — Lunderskov;
2) Copenhagen — Ringsted;
3) Køge Nord — Næstved;
4) Ringsted — Holeby;
5) Roskilde — Kalundborg;
6) Fredericia — Aarhus;
7) Aarhus — Aalborg;
8) Vejle — Struer;
9) Aalborg — Frederikshavn.
In total, these 9 sections cover approximately 1 330 kilometres of railway (1 kilometre of single track railway counts as 1 kilometre and double track railway as 2 kilometres). The sections are located across Denmark, and when the construction is finished the Electrification Programme will almost have doubled the amount of kilometres of railway with a catenary system in Denmark. Banedanmark is entitled to terminate for convenience for section no. 4 above of the contract on conditions specified in the contract.
In addition to the 9 sections 6 optional sections are included, which Banedanmark are entitled to order at terms stated in the Contract. These sections are (numbering continued from above):
10) New railway across Vestfyn;
11) New railway across Vejle Fjord;
12) New railway Hovedgård — Hasselager;
13) New railway Lindholm — Aalborg Airport;
14) Hjørring — Hirtshals;
15) New railway Jelling — Billund.
The Employer currently plans to include section 13 to be covered by the Contract.
The contract as an option includes electrification of depots and siding tracks. This option covers up to 260 kilometres of railway (40 km of depots and siding tracks is included in the main scope).
The electrification of the above mentioned sections is a 'Design-Build contract' and includes e.g. design and installation of a traction catenary system and the electrical distribution infrastructure to secure the power supply.
The contract includes an option for Banedanmark to buy components (as spares or for future electrification) for the catenary system, traction power supply system and local remote control units. This option is handled as a framework agreement.
The contract further includes an option for the future maintenance of the above sections no. 1-9.
Finally the contract includes an option for design and installation of compensation equipment to balance the load created by the activity of the system.
The duration of the contract is expected to be from 2015-2027 for the nine sections (10 with section 13) included in the contract. In case the abovementioned options (regarding extension of scope (e.g. additional railway sections), purchase of components and/or maintenance) are exercised, the duration of the contract can be extended beyond 2027.
